Your ES Child & Goodwill

Your Child is graduating from an ES (exceptional student) program. What will your child do after graduation?  Imagine a place where your child can learn and gain work experience at the same time.

Introducing Goodwill Rehabilitation Services

Your child has come a long way, and has had many accomplishments that you as parents can be extremely proud of. But what happens when your child graduates? What should you do next to help him or her to take further steps toward independence? Goodwill South Florida's Rehabilitation Services may be just the solution for you and your child, to help him or her flourish and grow in a real, work environment that's safe and guided, while still receiving a Dade-County Public School education. Give your child an edge in transitioning toward gainful, meaningful community employment that will one day make them self-supporting and independent.

What is Goodwill Rehabilitation Services?
Our Rehabilitation Services Division provides case management and coordinates the process that empowers participants to overcome employment barriers and develop the skills needed to achieve economic independence.

What will my child learn?
Participants learn valuable skills, build their self-esteem and develop good work and social habits--all in an extensively supervised environment. Learning all these facets of 'working' brings them one step closer to a paying job--and to independence.

How does the process work?
Service for people with disabilities usually begins with a comprehensive evaluation, to discover their potential and guide them toward a realistic path to achieving their goals. Participants have a range of programs available to them.

What are the programs available to my child?
Here are the programs that your child may participate in, depending on the results of an assessment by our trained staff:

  • Work Activities Center
Geared towards people with developmental disabilities. Uses repetitive tasks to teach job skills and good work habits.
  • Work Adjustment
Stresses attendance, appropriate dress, following directions, and handling personal and social concerns.
  • Vocational Training
Available in six different skill areas. For students who are able to learn more challenging job-related tasks.
  • Work Programs
Participants can develop work skills while on a paying job in an industrial setting under the supervision of the rehabilitation staff of counselors.

What are the programs like?
Goodwill work training programs take place in a Montessori learning environment, a developmentally appropriate approach to learning in which students learn from and with each other by experiencing things firsthand. In addition, students will experience the world of work in our workshop program.

When does the program take place?
Participants attend our programs from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm each weekday

Is lunch included?

Is transportation included?
Transportation is provided free of charge by the Miami-Dade County Public School System.

Are there other non-work programs available?
The Goodwill recreation program, which includes the GI Pride Choir and Band, is also available to participants.

What happens when he or she completes one of the programs?
When participants complete the program, Job Development and Placement Services will assist them in gaining the necessary skills to acquire and maintain sheltered, supported or competitive community employment.

Who qualifies for Rehabilitative Services?
In order to enter the program, participants must be 18 years and older, have a Florida photo identification, be authorized to work in the United States and have a social security card. They must also be enrolled in the Medwaiver program, or at least be on the mailing list.
